Banquets

There will be two banquets coming up for WVWC Swim Team. The first will be March 17 at The Howard's residence. This is going to be an afternoon event for all swimmers and parents. The coaches have numerous awards to give out and want to recognize the team for their accomplishments this season. Parents are encouraged to bring food items. If you have any questions please ask Mr. Les Howard or myself.

The second one will be on April 29 at 6pm. This is the All-Athlete Banquet held by the college and is a formal event. It is also mandatory each student-athlete attends :)

Orange & Black Day

Orange & Black Day was held yesterday at WVWC. It was a great day with almost 200 prospective students. The day was to honor those who have achieved an academic scholarship at the college. The swim team was fortunate to have numerous recruits to be a part of this day. Our recruits got to spend the evening with the team which was a great experience. It was a wonderful weekend for Bobcat Swimming!

Conference Wrap-Up

We have been back from conference since Sunday and it is still setting in how incredible we swam at conference.  As a coach, I am truly speechless with the accomplishments achieved last week.  We had 100% success across the  board with every athlete achieving his/her best time in every event swum.  Some may have been slightly disappointed because they did not reach their goal, but all in all he/she achieved their best time ever.  Goals are meant to push you further.  Sometimes we reach them and other times we do not.  We cannot look at what we did not reach but what we did reach.  We can also reflect and look at what we can do better to improve and get that goal next season.  If each athlete can say that he/she gave each race 110% then he/she cannot be disappointed.  Each day at conference was a new day which brought new challenges.  Our team conquered conference with confidence, pride, and passion.

I received a wonderful email from a parent from another team complimenting our team.  It stated "We have never seen coaches so energetic, passionate, supportive and caring.  We observed your team over the 4 days of competition and saw what a family you were.  Each swimmer supported each other and believed in their coaches.  It was a treat to watch!  Job Well Done! "  This email brought tears to my eyes!  Our coaches care more about this team then anyone can realize, however people are realizing it.  It means so much that people we do not know see our team as a family and compliment us.

Each day at conference we came across strangers who had nothing but wonderful things to say about our team.  For instance, at Nothing But Noodles we met two families who were amazed at how well mannered and polite the team is.  We had a group of parents from the meet compliment us on our great sportsmanship.

These compliments say a lot about our student-athletes and make the coaches even more proud!

Conference was an experience of a lifetime as we broke 4 school records, missed 9 by a hair, and achieved 7 NCAA B cut times.  The coaching staff was beyond proud of what the team achieved over those 4 days of competition.  Coach Rod and I knew we would have success, but were blown away with the level of success we achieved.  Rod and I could not be more proud to be part of this team's family.  It has been an incredible season and we cannot wait for what is to come in the coming seasons.

WAY TO GO BOBCATS!

Day 3 Prelims

Day 3 Prelims was off to an outstanding start!  Hope Lima and Jeff Dye are both seated 8th in their individual event tonight.  Jeff Dye broke his own record in the 200 freestyle this morning and looks to shave even more time off this evening.  Max Garner and Thomas Bartleman both just missed school records in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly.  We look to achieve those this evening. Rachael Bailer, Vivian Minkemeyer and Mark Mattis will also be competing individually tonight.  Every swimmer this morning achieved a best time this morning.  We continue to improve each session!  There has not been one swimmer yet who has not achieved a best time.  Tonight both 200 medley relays will be chasing after the school records!

Keep posted for updates!

Day 1 Recap

We are off to an amazing start!

The night began with the 1000 yard freestyle with Hope Lima, Natalie Howard and Phil Fisher.  All three achieved best times and Fisher also got an NCAA B cut.  There were nothing but smiles going into the 800 yard freestyle relay.  The women (Ashley Kirkhart, Vivian Minkemeyer, Rachael Kelly and Natalie Howard) kicked it off when they all crushed their best times!  The men were the last to swim this evening.  It was a outstanding job as Thomas Bartleman, Mark Mattis, Phil Fisher, and Jeff Dye as they broke the school record with a time of 6:58.85!  Congratulations!

Way to start things off Bobcats!  Looking forward to day 2 :)

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important then fear.

Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Monica Morin on being inducted into West Virginia Wesleyan College Hall of Fame!  You have deserved every bit of it!  It was an honor meeting you along with other alumni and former Coach Denton Quick.  It was an amazing event that shared numerous of stories.  All of the inductees had remarkable stories and well deserved to be past of the Hall of Fame.

Here are a few words former Coach Denton Quick had:

"She was toughest swimmer I ever came in contact with. There wasnt a workout that I could write that she wouldnt chew up and spit out, and make sure every other swimmer tried their hardest as well. She was always honest with me about her training, even if we disagreed, we always worked together to make sure her goals were accomplished. Believe me, she trained differently than any other swimmer. She was a machine. A machine in the pool. A machine in the classroom. But, as I write this I realize that she was not a machine personality-wise. She was always wanting to see the world, take adventerous treks and explore new activities. Which is why she was an awesome Outdoor Rec employee.

In the end she qualified for NCAA's all four years, going to Orlando twice, Buffalo and North Dakota.

Mon I am so proud of you! I am so glad I was in attendance for your induction."

Congratulations Monica Morin on a job well done!
