Yesterdays gauntlet for Phil's birthday

Fairmont State Invitational

Tonight and tomorrow afternoon we will compete at the Fairmont State Invitational.  The teams competing will be WVWC, FSU, Sweet Brier, and WV Tech.  The meet should be very exciting and close as the Bobcats and Falcons always present a close meet.

Since the WV Sate Games two weeks ago we have been training extremely tough and have not given in to the challenge.  We also had a small alumni meet last Saturday which was a chance to kick back and simply enjoy the meet.  Each week the student-athletes look stronger, faster, smarter.  This weekend should be a fun meet to see us go fast, but in 3 weeks we will go FAST!!!!!!

Our goal this weekend is to improve on what we started the season with, race the people next to you, have fun, and to swim fast.  The Bobcats have proven we are a growing team and that other teams should be timid  of what we have coming....

Come out and support your bobcats tonight at 6pm and tomorrow at 12pm at FSU.

A few pictures from the weekend

WV State Games Wrap Up

First, I would like to thank the Sorsaia, Hill, and Fisher Families for hosting our team during our time in Huntington, WV.  It was a pleasure being at your wonderful homes for a home cooked meal and to relax.  This team is special and the families are a large part of it.  No other team in WV has families that take time to open their homes and fill their kitchens with home cooking.  Thank you!!!

The WV State Games was a great kick off to the season.  We had the opportunity to swim against all of the colleges in WV, including WVU, Marshall, Fairmont, Wheeling Jesuit, Davis&Elkins, and WVTech.  Marshall held the meet this year and did a fine job.  As a coach, I do not expect best times at this point in the season.  We use this meet as a chance to see where we are in our training and what we need to focus more on before we taper in November for our mid season meet at the University of Pittsburgh.

Last season this meet was very challenging with a 3 session meet in 2 days we got very tired right off the start.  This season was the complete opposite, we did not get tired as quickly and were able to hold our races strong.  At this point in the season we were able to take our races out fast and hang on.  Typically, you would see the athletes struggle come the end of a race but this did not happen for us.  We were able to hold on versus completely dying.   Our closing speed is not here at the start of the season but will get better as we get closer to the mid season meet.  In comparison to last year we are off to a WAY better start and look good.

As a team, we were the team we always are!  Everyone supported each other and were cheering during every race.  As a coach, these athletes make my job easy because they are incredible individuals!  We finished 3rd and 5th overall.  Team scores are not the focus at this meet.  The focus is to see where we are and what we need to improve on in the coming meets.

There were 3 athletes who achieved a life time best time and many who were very close.  We are right where we need to be at this point.  There were many stand out races: Rodrigo in the 500 free and 200 im, Mark in the 200 im, Tosha in the 1650 free, R.Kelley and Becca in the 100 free, Vivian in the 100 fly, R.Bailer in the 100 breast, 500 free, Steven in the 50, 100, 200 free, Brumley in the 200 fly, Sophia in the 50 free, ALL of the relays, Max in the 100 and 200 breast, and many others!  I could go on for days but for now I will attach the results for everyone to see.

We start this week reflecting on what we need to improve and continue to push to get into peek shape so we can taper in November.  We have a group of recruits coming this weekend and our Alumni Meet on Saturday at 10am.

Great Job Team and Thank You to the parents for your continued support!

Great Start to the 2012-2013 Season

Great start to the season. We look good and are ahead of where we were last year at this point.

The meet started with the 200free relay and the women were 7th and 9th, while the men were 5th and 6th. Next came the 500 free where the women swam very strong and the men did too. Rodrigo cruised to 4th place and is close to the school record. The 200IM was next, both men and women did very well. Rodrigo was at it again and almost won, however finished in 2nd .53 seconds. Mark Mattis was close behind in 6th place. The final individual event was the 50 free. The 50free is a race that requires a lot of fine tuning. With that said, they did well but there is fine tuning to be done. The 400 medley relay concluded the evening. The women finished 7th and the men were 4th. Both relays are on pace for school records and NCAA qualifying times. We will look to our mid season meet to make those qualifying times.

After the meet we went to the Sorsaia's house for a wonderful dinner. Thank you to the Sorsaia's for hosting us.

For now we head to bed to rest for a full day tomorrow. The morning session begins at 9 am and the afternoon at 4pm.

Keep it up Bobcats!!!!!

Tomorrow

Tomorrow we will travel to Marshall for the WV State Games. The team is ready to go! The campus is quiet as fall break began yesterday and sunny on this gorgeous fall day. One of the best things at Wesleyan is the campus during the fall, it is simply breath taking.

After starting our season on August 27th we have come a long way. Each day these student-athletes continue to impress the coaching staff. Their desire to achieve their goals is through the roof and they will not stop till they reach the top. This weekend will be a great indicator where we are at this point in the season. We are eager to compete and ready to take on WV!

Rest up & get ready to swim fast!

Let's go bobcats!!!!!!!

11 Days

There is only 11 days that remain till our first meet of the season.  We will kick off our season at the WV State Games which will be held at Marshall.  Each week we are getting stronger and making big strides.  The coaching staff continues to push the student-athletes past their threshold, yet not too far.  We are way ahead of where we were last year at this point, which will make for a great mid-season meet come November 16-18 at the University of Pittsburgh.

The question last week was:  What is worse...temporary pain or regret?  The response was: Pain in Temporary, Glory is Forever!

Keep up the hard work team!  WVWC...WVWC...WVWC...WVWC!!!!!!!!
