First Home Meet Results

Our first home meet of the season was a huge success.  It was a close meet against Oberlin College and Malone University.  In the end the Bobcats came out on top! There were many swimmers who achieved life time best time and numerous of swimmers who were almost achieved a life time best time.  One of the most incredible races of the meet was watching Kim Stephens swim the 100 yard freestyle.  Kim crushed her life time best time by 4 seconds!  When she touched the wall she looked over at me with the biggest smile and said where did that come from and I said from your hard work!  Way to go Kim!  Another amazing swim was the men's 200 free relay when we were stroke for stroke with Oberlin and then Jeff Dye dove into the water and blew them away and won the meet! Way to go gentlemen! I want to thank Hope Lima for being a hero and stepping up to the plate for the 200 butterfly.  You truly are a team leader and have a heart of gold!

Thank you Brian Peresie and Mark Fino for a great meet!

I could not be more proud of how this team conducted themselves and performed.  We will continue to work hard and prepare for our mid season meet at IUP.  We have two more dual meets coming up.  The first meet is next Saturday November 5th at Washington and Jefferson College and the second meet is November 12th here at Wesleyan against Notre Dame of Ohio.

TGIF

TGIF!

It is finally Friday and the hype for tomorrow continues to grow.  Every thing is set for our first home meet of the 2011-2012 season.  We will be swimming against Malone University and Oberlin College at 1:00pm.  It will be a strong meet with all three teams fighting for victory.

We are honored to have numerous recruits here this weekend to see what it is like to be part of the Bobcat Family.  It is our high hopes they enjoy their trip and attend Wesleyan in the future.

Rest up swimmers and eat well!

What is Success?

Today's post is about success.  I spent the day yesterday doing some reflecting on our season thus far and where we currently stand.  After reflecting on all of this I realized some very important factors that go into making each athlete successful.

There are three very important factors that go into the formula of success.
1. Workouts: The workouts need to be designed for success and this is the job of the coaching staff.  It is also the job of each athlete to communicate to their coaches what he/she believes/feels they may need.
2. Work Ethic: What you put into each workout is what you will get out of it.  Coaches want to be able to see the desire through their athletes' effort.  We understand that some days are a struggle, but 100% effort can still be given.  Not every day is going to be your best day, but what you can do is do your best!  When a coach notices an athlete struggling, they should be able to ask the athlete what they are focusing on and the athlete should be able to say "streamline, turns, breakouts, pullouts, stroke count, hand postion, etc."  Even if the athlete may have an off practice and is not able to practice to their daily potential, they can always focus on good technique so they can get something our of each workout.  When you walk onto the pool deck each athlete needs to think about what he/she can do to improve today?  When you walk off of the pool deck each athlete needs to ask himself/herself what they did to improve today?  These are questions that need to be asked each and every practice.
3. Attitude: Your attitude can really define not only your character but your level of success.  Having a positive mental attitude sets you up to achieve your goals.  It also helps push you through those challenging times when you feel like you cannot keep going.  "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference & the only disability in life is a bad attitude."

Here is a short motivational video that may help you understand how success is about picking yourself up one more time:   How Winners Are Made

They say that 'Talk is Cheap' and I believe this.  There are so many times when we say we will do something and we do not.  It is not because your failed that it did not happen, but it happened because you did not try.  As long as you can say that you tried your best you will never fail!  Saying your goals is not enough, you must take action!  At times you will feel afraid of a set, or feel like you can’t breathe or move is when you need to have your positive attitude and thoughts remind you of your goals or simply to suck it up and get after it.

You need to find a positive thought or saying that works for you. Something that will push you the extra 5 yds on an underwater when you want to breathe. Something to tell yourself before a set when you may not want to give 100% effort because you are afraid.  Something that tells you to believe in yourself!

Fall Break

Fall Break has officially started!  As a coaching staff, we decided to give our student-athletes this time to visit family, friends and to relax.  We have been working very hard since September 6th and this team deserves a small break.  The team is expected to get in the water at home or on campus to maintain a good feeling in the water.

I also made a visit to Coach Rod and his wonderful wife to congratulate them on their new addition to their family.  The Hunte family is at home and settling into things and enjoying their precious baby boy! Although, Coach Rod is beyond happy to have his second son here he is missing the team and the pool deck.  He will be back in action after fall break.

Enjoy your fall break team!

A New Day

What are you going to do today to make you one inch, step, or a hundreth of a second closer to your goal?

As we begin this week we will first reflect back at the meet this past weekend and then look forward to what is next.  We will continue to train hard as we are preparing for our mid season invitational at IUP in mid November.  What can you do better at? Whatever it is, dedicate yourself and time to making the changes needed to reach your goal.  Keep your eye on the prize no matter how tired you are!

WVU State Games Wrap-Up

The WVU State Games have come to a close.  It was an incredible first meet with lots of outstanding swims.  The coaches are beyond proud of our athletes and their accomplishments.  The meet was a  blast!  If you were not there at the meet you missed seeing the team laughing and cheering with one another.  Smiles were everywhere and confidence is beginning to grow.

The swimmer of the meet was Brandon Atkins!  He swam absolutely incredible!  Throughout the last 8 weeks Brandon has listened and believed in the coaching staff.  His heart is filled with gold and has dedicated himself to improving.  Watching Brandon swim was truly amazing!  I could not be more proud of him. Way to go Brandon and keep up the hard work!

We enter this week with a short week of training due to fall break.  Fall break will be a time for our athletes to spend time with their family and friends.  They have earned the time off, however are expected to continue to train over the extended weekend.  The next meet is home at Wesleyan on October 29th at 1:00pm again Oberlin and Malone.  Hope to see you there!

LET'S GO BOBCATS!

Today is our first meet of the season and we are READY to go!  The season began 7 weeks ago and has flown by quicker than we could even imagine.  After our hard work and dedication day in and day out it is time for us to show West Virginia and those watching who we are.

"I wouldn't say anything is impossible. I think that everything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and put the work and time into it". Michael Phelps

Motivational words to my athletes: This meet is an opportunity for us to try new things and to see where we are at in our training.  It is the chance to race against other West Virginia schools and show them the new era in Wesleyan swimming.  It is time to come together as a team and support each other.  It is time to step up on the starting block with confidence and pride.  Every race is a new race!  FIRE UP!  LET'S GO BOBCATS!

Gorgeous Fall Day

Published with Blogger-droid v1.7.4

It is a gorgeous fall day here at Wesleyan.  Today we will complete our final preparations for the WVU State Games that begin tomorrow!  All of our student-athletes are excited for the meet.  We have had a challenging week of practices, yet continue to swim well.  I am looking forward to seeing where we are at in our training.  This will be the first meet of the season and my first meet as the Head Coach!  It is a new ear in Wesleyan Swimming and we are looking forward to showing all of the West Virginia schools how hard we have been working and how far we have come.  "Two Teams, One Family!"

Two Days

Only two days left til the WVU State Games!  As our excitement continues to grow we continue to work hard in and out of the pool. Practices this week, thus far, have been challenging.  The swimmers are tired which makes today's afternoon off an important time to study and rest.  It is important that each athlete take care of his/her school work first and foremost!  It is also a crucial time to rest!

This afternoon we will have our team pictures.  Unfortunately it is not a sunny day but a rainy and chilly one therefore we will have to take pictures inside opposed to outside in the gorgeous fall leaves.

Recruiting for our 2012 class is well on it's way!  We are looking at bringing in a large class for next season to add to our Bobcat Family!

Test Set # 2

TEST SET # 2 IS TODAY!

This afternoon we will be having a team practice and will complete our test set.  The first time we did the test set the results were not bad, but it was evident we had no endurance.  After spending a lot of time during training on increasing our endurance, we will put the swimmers to the test with a test set.

Test sets are a great way to gauge where we are at in our training and is a great opportunity for the team to RACE!  It is simple...."Just Race!"

Results to come later!
